Orathai  Srisilp. 2018. The Commodification Process of Cultural Tourism in Nan District. PhD Thesis, Southeast Asian Studies, Naresuan University. 

ABSTRACT
The study the process of cultural commodification of Muang Nan district is aimed to; 1) understand how social and cultural capitals of Muang Nan District are converted to be cultural product for tourism. 2) to study the adaptation processof stakeholders in response to the government policy for the cultural commodification to promote tourism, and its subsequent impacts on those stakeholders in Muang Nan district.

This research was qualitative research. The researcher used social capitals cultural capitals, cultural tourism, cultural identity, cultural product, traditional invention, and co-operation. Sampled populations were governmental sectors, private sectors, local communities in Muang Nan district and Thai tourists who visited Muang Nan. Field research are four types of tourism; historical tourism, Agro-tourism, urban tourism and festival tourism.

The study found that state’s tourism promotion policies were instrumentalto the commodification process which initiated by trend building, sourcing cultural identities, meaning creations, cultural product presentations, adaptations of relevant stakeholders, cultural reproduction and the impacts form the cultural reproduction.As a result, the meaning of cultural capitals has been modified through the process of reproductions which resulted in valuable commercial gains.

The impacts of cultural commodification in response to cultural tourism in Muang Nan district has resulted in positive outlooks on the economy and raised the cultural capital prides for the local people. However, the negative impacts of such cultural capitalism were the wakened authenticity of original cultures, and the conflicts among members of the community due to profits distributions and other management issues.
