ABSTRACT
Almost all of the studies on the politics in the Northeastern region has focused on the "local leaders" that architected changes and evolutions to the society and politics of the region. In researches on the movement of the masses, they are the main actors on the political organizations or groups that helped transmit the ideology and establish the public movement. At present, even though there are some studies that explain the politics of everyday-life of the rural people, but it does not attempt to understand the force of consciousness behind the political expression of "subaltern class." This thesis, therefore, posits the belief of Naga as an ideology that has been interpreted and signified certain meanings for political movements of the villagers at Kham Chanot in Ban Dung District, Udon Thani. " Phaya Sri Suthothanak" is a belief that originated and developed in the local area that the common folks highly praise as a Bodhisattva who is the center of the universe in folk religion, i.e. a value system that influences the villagers’ behaviors in every dimension, including political operations. People's faith has apparently generated a ritual community which has interpreted and formed the doctrine and the ritual that is different from the state’ s sanctioned mainstream Buddhism. In addition, a moral system of the ritual community that is rooted in folk religion also affects the daily-life of the villagers. Moreover, the belief in the sacred power of Phaya Si Suthothanak has also been used by the villagers as an instrument to fight for their shares in the local economic area. More importantly, it is a religious ideology that brought the villagers to join the "Red Shirts" movement in attempting to create an ideal society.
